First Cut
First Cut
What went well?
In our sequence, we got some good shots that were fluently put together. Our actors and location also suited the part well.
Problems?
When we had edited our first cut, we found that there were a few problems with out sequence. Firstly, we found that the titles had a few mistakes and went over two shots. We then noticed that two scenes needed re filming as the angles were not suitable and their were also shadows within them that shouldn't have been. We also realised that the music did not suit the sequence, therefore we will change it. As well as this, we noticed that the distribution titles were to fast and that the audience could not read them therefore they nee to be longer. We also have to add in the voice over of the news reporter and add an extra scene to make our sequence longer.
Plan of Action:
- Remove the word 'starring' from the titles as this is unprofessional.
- Move the titles around so that they do not go over two different shots.
- Add an extra scene of the main character getting ready and leaving his house to add some longer shots so that our titles finish before any dialogue starts.
- Fill in the gap when they move from one location to another by using footsteps.
- Move the title of the film to a wide shot that has a longer duration.
- Record the voice over of the reporter.
- Make the distribution titles longer in duration so that the audience has a chance to read them.
- Make the titles smaller.
What have I learnt?
When editing our first cut, I found that it is important to ask the opinions of others as you are not always able to spot your own mistakes, which is important if you want to create a great piece.

Analyse previous students work
Task Ten: Analyse previous students work
What have I learnt?
During this task, I have looked at the work of previous students, and discussed what was good and what wasn't so good. This helped me to decide what I had to do to our opening sequence so that it was professional and did not include small mistakes that others had made, such as bad lighting.
Typography Research
Task Eighteen: Typography Research
For our research, we looked into font's that would be best suited to our genre of film. We then created a survey on those particular fonts so that we could gain some insight into what our audience thought.
When we had received all of our survey's, we looked at the results and decide which font is best suited, that the audience had chose.
We then put the titles together to see what they would look like.
What have I learnt?
During this task, I have learnt that it is important to ask the opinions of your chosen target audience, so that your decision is best suited to what the audience feel is best, therefore engaging them.

Representation in Films
Task Nine: Representation in Films
What have I learnt?
During this research task, I have learnt how to use things such as mise en scene, editing and sound to create different representations and social groups in films.
Audience profile
Task Thirteen: Audience Profile
What have I learnt?
During this task, I have learnt that our primary audience will be teenage males and our secondary audience will be females and young adults. We have also decided that our opening sequence will be aimed towards the working class as the protagonist will be from a working class family, therefore our audience may be able to relate to the character.
Draft and Final Script
Task Fourteen: Draft and Final Script
Draft
Final Script
What have I learnt?
During this task, I have learnt that in order to get the perfect script, you must go over the narrative various times, so that the stage directions and speech is in the right order and where they should be.

Create a continuity sequence of at least 20 different shots
Creative Task Five: Create a continuity sequence of at least 20 different shots
What went well?
During this task, we found that planning out our scenes worked very well as it meant that we could film faster and more efficiently as we knew what we were doing. We also found that our match on action shots were smooth and everything fit together nicely.
Problems?
We did not have many problems, however after editing, we did notice that there was a person stood in the back of one of our shots. This will be something that we will be looking out for in our final piece as it can affect the quality of our piece.
What have I learnt?
During this task, I have learnt that background is very important as it can affect the quality of your work if things such as people or shoes are in the corner of the shot. I have also learnt how to condense a sequence down by using quick shots so that you are able to fit every shot in the small amount of time that we have.
Thinking of a concept/Final idea
Task Twelve: Thinking of a concept/Final idea
Before we began to think of an idea, we looked at the positives and negatives of each sub genre so that we could clarify which type of coming of age film would appeal to the audience more.
In the end we chose...
We then began to think of a few ideas for different films.
After looking into each idea in more detail, we chose film idea 2, however we used elements of film idea 1. From idea 1, we have chosen to use the idea of teenage boys on bikes, then we merged this with film idea 2 and came up with the idea of two teenagers who discover a clone of themselves. We also decided to base our film around the 80's.
Once we had came up with an idea, we created a pitch, looking into certain things such as...
- Name ideas for our film.
We came up with the title 'humanoids' after looking at words linked with robots and science fiction.
- Age certificate
We looked into age certificates and decided that our film should be rated more than a PG but less than an 18.
- Location
For location, we came up with the idea of using an old council estate.
We also looked into:
- Characters
- Fashion
- Typography
- Narrative
- Audience
- Representation
- Institutions
Our Pitch
What have I learnt?
During this task, I have learnt that putting all your ideas onto a piece of paper can be helpful in deciding what is best and what is not so good. Also by sharing a pitch with others, you can gain other's opinions on your ideas, helping to create a better idea.

Narrative Structure
Task Eight: Narrative Structure
What have I learnt?
During this task, I have learnt that each of these theories are important in creating a good film. When creating our opening sequence, we will reveal the equilibrium, as well as hinting the disruption. We will also reveal who the hero and helper is as they will be our two main characters that will appear within the first 2 minutes.

Create a title credit sequence for a coming of age 80's film
Creative task four: Create a title credit sequence for a coming of age 80's film.
PROPS
For this task, we had to remake the title sequence of an 80's coming of age film. We chose 'footloose'.
What went well?
We found this task to be successful as we had learnt from our other creative tasks on what went wrong and what to do to solve those issues. We planned this task out carefully so that we had the right shoes, and the fight location. For the location, we chose an abandoned room with white walls, and a large whiteboard as a floor. This worked very well. The opening scene also included 23 pairs of shoes, therefore we worked together and found all 23 pairs. Also, when editing our clips, we found that we could not convert the text in adobe after affects to iMovie, therefore we used a green screen background and placed it under the text, then moved it to iMovie where we removed the green screen. We also found that the clips had bad lighting, therefore we brightened them up in iMovie to make the clips appear more upbeat and brighter.
Problems?
We found there to be hardly any problems during this task that we could not overcome, However, we found editing more difficult that usual as we were unfamiliar with the program, although after a while of playing around with the program, we overcame the problem.
What have I learnt?
During the task, I have learnt that titles are very important in the opening sequence as they can reveal a lot about the type of film it is. When doing the credits for our opening sequence, we must keep in mind that different fonts can convey different things about the film therefore we must chose a suitable one for our narrative.

Audience Research
Task Six: Audience Research
From this in depth research of opening sequences to coming of age films, we found out background information that we think are important to help create our opening sequence, such as age ratings and audience types.

For this task, we surveyed 16 male and females of ages 13 to 41 using a paper survey about various questions. We then added it to a survey monkey to evaluate our results and establish what type of films, and what about films, people liked and disliked.
We then interviewed a few of our target audience to get a further insight on what they like and dislike about films.
What have I learnt?
From this task, I have learnt what types of films people enjoy, and what about them they like and dislike. This helps us create a better idea of what people enjoy about coming of age films so that we can add these to our opening sequence to make it suitable for our target audience.
Title Research
Task Seven: Title Research
What have I learnt?
During this task, I have learnt that an opening sequence includes titles that goes in order of:
1. Name of the studio that is distributing the film.
2. Name of the production company responsible for making the film.
3. A (Producer’s Name) Production.
4. A Film by (Director’s Name).
5. Starring (this is optional or can be paired with the first cast member’s name), followed by the names of all principal actors.
6. Film title.
7. Featured cast members.
8. Casting by
9. Music, composer, or original score.
10. Production designer.
11. At this point it can vary; you might see makeup, costume, or visual effects credits here.
When making our opening sequence, we will follow this structure so that our opening sequence looks professional and is in the correct order.

Director Case Study
Task Five: Director Case Study
John Hughes
John Hughes Films
Two examples of his most famous opening sequences
Jason Reitman
Jason Reitman Films
Two examples of his most famous opening sequences
What have I learnt?
During this task, I have learned that different directors use different styles to create an effective film. I have also learnt that there are different types of coming of age films, such as the more serious ones created by Jason Reitman, or the more light-hearted and comedic films created by John Hughes. When looking into the different types of films created by these directors, I discovered that within light-hearted films, lots of high key lighting and upbeat music is featured, which i will try to incorporate into my opening sequence.

Remake the opening of a Coming Of Age Film
Creative Task Three: Remake the opening of a
Coming Of Age Film
Coming Of Age Film
For this task, we had to create the opening sequence of a film, so we chose The Perks Of Being A Wallflower.
Our Version
What went well?
During this creative task, I found that the lighting went well as it matched the real opening sequence. I also found that the voice over was very similar to the voice over done in the opening sequence, therefore it was more accurate.
Problems?
When creating this task, I found there to be a few problems with the shooting as there was an issue with trying to smoothly zoom on the camera without it seeming jumpy. However, When we shoot our final piece, we will find away around this problem, so that if we use a zoom, it will be smooth.
What have I learnt?
During this task, I learnt to recognize different shots. I also learnt that using an over the shoulder shot, and a track shot can be effective in telling the audience a story from the protagonist's view. When creating my opening sequence, I would like to use various angles and shots to create different effects, as well as using the lighting to create the right atmosphere.
Preliminary Task
Task Eleven: Preliminary Task
Unedited Version
For this task, we had to demonstrate match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180 degree rule by filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room, sitting down opposite another character and exchanging a few lines of dialogue. This is the raw footage.
Edited Version
What have I learnt?
when creating this task, I learned that it is very important to plan out what we are doing by using a story board so that we can decide how many shots their needs to be. I also learned that when filming, it is important to follow the plan, as well as keep a steady hand and use the correct camera angles to create the right effect. When editing, I also learned that it is important to make the clips run smoothly together. This creates a more fluent scene.

Conventions of an Opening Sequence
Task Three: Conventions of an Opening Sequence
What have I learnt?
During this research task, I have found lighting to be a key convention of Coming Of Age films as high key lighting can create a lighter happier atmosphere, Where as low key lighting can make an issue seem more serious. I have also found that the use of music in an opening scene can create different effects, therefore when making my opening sequence, I will make sure to chose the right music to create the right effect. The use of costume and setting is also important, as it can set the scene.

Producers and Distributors
Task Four: Producers and Distributors
What have I learnt?
During this task, I have learnt who the major and minor film companies are. I have also learnt that paramount pictures is a big producer/distributor of Coming of age films as well a producing films that are family friendly, who's Age certificates ranged from U's to 18's. As well as this, Warner Brothers is also a large producer/distributor of Coming of Age films, who's age certificates are very similar to Paramount Pictures as they also produce family friendly films. I was also very surprised to see that most large film companies are based in America.

Match On Action
Creative Task Two: Match on Action
Abil's First Day
What went well?
When editing our scene, we noticed that the audio went well as it fit perfectly over our scenes. As well as this, our videos ran fluidly into each other, creating a smooth transition from shot to shot. We also made sure that there was no diegetic music with the back ground that was not meant to be there, which was an improvement from our last creative task.
Problems?
When editing, we found it difficult to find out which shot fit where as we filmed each shot a few times to make sure they would run fluidly when putting them together and feature no mistakes.
What have I learnt?
During this task, I have developed my camera skills and learnt new camera angles and different techniques to make my shots run smoothly together, so that the audience doesn't know they have been shot at different times.
